Gonna miss you Heavy D!

Last year, hip-hop lost one of its icons. Heavy D suddenly passed away at age 44 on November 8th 2011 from blood clot. To me him passing away so sudden was shocking Born in Jamaica, Heavy D moved to the United States while very young and as he grew older, he formed a group called Heavy D and The Boyz and went to create no. 1 singles such as Now That We Found Love and Is it Good to You among others. Not straying from his Jamaican roots, Heavy collaborated with Jamaican artists such as such as Super Cat with, "No Worry We."   He was also the president of Uptown Records with artists such as Mary J. Blige and Jodeci.  During the 90's he brought positive music to his fans amidst the sea of gangsta music.  Heavy is going to be missed with his entrepreneurial spirit and positive energy.  RIP Heavy D!

Operation Desert Storm

I was about to post on of my favorite 90's tv shows but since this Friday is Veteran's Day, I think it's fitting to mention a certain war during the 90's to celebrate those veterans who served at that time! The Gulf War (or Gulf War 1) sometimes called Operation Desert Storm occurred on 2 August 1990 to 28 February 1991 which to me was the shortest war at that time!  It began with the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and with President George Bush's urging (GW Bush's father for those don't know) the US and other countries such as Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom began to battle with the Iraqi forces led by Saddam Hussein.  Eventually defeated, the Iraqi forces withdrew from Kuwait and the war ended.  As of now, there are military bases in Kuwait.   I was very young when it happened and I remembered being excited to see war stories thanks to CNN which reminded me of GI Joe where the coalition forces were the GI Joes and the Iraqi soldiers were part of Cobra.  It wasn't until many years later when I joined the army and I've seen the reality of the military and the war which changed my perception of the military.  I could only imagine what the soldiers went through at that time. I'm just amazed that the war ended so quickly compared to the current Iraqi war. I also want to thank the Persian Gulf War vets for the sacrifices they've made and thanks for serving!

PS Here's a theme song of sorts for the war, Oleta Adams, "Get Here."  Enjoy!

Welcome to the 90's

Hi everyone!!  Welcome to my new blog!!  Check out my 90's adventure where gen xers can  reminisce about the good times and the younger generation can go back in time to see how cool it was. I was watching Martin last weekend, remembering watching it back in Trinidad after coming home from school.  Plus the song, "I'm a 90's Girl," kept sticking in my head and then it hit me!! I should do a blog on the 90's!! What a blast it was, the music, especially soca and reggae, the tv shows which had depth compared to trashy reality shows today and even the style was special.    So join me as go back in time and enjoy the ride dudes!

Oh and the song that kept sticking in my head!!  Enjoy!!
